Common faults and symptoms

A commercial dishwasher runs short cycles at high temperature all day long. That is why most problems come from blocked arms and filters, limescale, the dosing system and loss of temperature.

  1. 01

    Dishes not coming out clean

Grease and food residue stay on plates, glasses turn dull.

    Possible causes
    • Blocked wash and rinse arms or nozzles
    • Dirty tank water and full filters
    • Low wash temperature
    • Insufficient detergent dosing
  2. 02

    Not heating, cold rinse water

The cycle takes longer, the machine keeps waiting to heat up, or the dishes do not come out hot.

    Possible causes
    • Burnt-out or scaled boiler or tank heating element
    • Faulty thermostat or temperature sensor
    • Contactor or safety thermostat
    • Missing phase in the electrical supply
  3. 03

Not taking in water or not filling the tank

The machine gets stuck at the filling stage or shows an error.

    Possible causes
    • Closed water valve or low mains pressure
    • Blocked water inlet valve or inlet filter
    • Problem with the level (pressure) switch or its hose
    • Clogged softener or filter cartridge
  4. 04

    Not draining

Water stays in the tank at the end of the cycle or the end of the day.

    Possible causes
    • Faulty or blocked drain pump
    • Grease and debris building up in the drain line
    • Overflow pipe or plug not seating properly
  5. 05

Spots, streaks or foam on glasses

White spots and streaks remain after drying, or foam forms in the machine.

    Possible causes
    • Incorrect rinse-aid dosing setting
    • Hard water and limescale
    • Using household (foaming) detergent
    • Dishes loaded without scraping off food residue
  6. 06

    Noisy pump or water leaks

Unusual noise during washing, or water collecting under the machine.

    Possible causes
    • Wash pump motor or capacitor
    • Pump shaft seal and gaskets
    • Foreign objects in the pump (toothpicks, labels, broken glass)
    • Door and tank gaskets

What we check during a service visit

  • Wash and rinse arms, nozzles and filters
  • Tank and boiler temperatures, heating elements and thermostats

  • Limescale; operation of the water softener, if fitted
  • Door and hood mechanism, safety switches
  • Test wash and temperature measurement

Before you call us

These checks are safe to do and make it easier to describe the fault.

  1. Check that the water valve is open and the detergent and rinse-aid containers are full.
  2. Switch the machine off and, once the tank has cooled, remove and clean the filters and the wash and rinse arms.
  3. Take a photo of the error code on the display and of the rating plate.
  4. Note whether the problem appears in every wash or only in one programme.

Do not work on the electrical panel, the gas line or the refrigerant circuit yourself; switch the unit off and call us.

Maintenance tips

These are general recommendations; the instructions and values in your unit’s manual always take priority.

Every day

  • At the end of the day, drain the tank; remove and clean the filters and the wash and rinse arms.
  • Rinse the inside of the tank and leave the door or hood ajar to dry.
  • Scrape food residue off the dishes before loading them.
  • During the day, change the tank water as it gets dirty.

Every week

  • Check the nozzles for limescale and blockages.
  • Check the detergent and rinse-aid hoses for kinks, air or leaks.
  • Wipe the door and tank gaskets and check them for wear.
  • If there is a water softener, check its salt and indicator.

At scheduled maintenance (technical service)

  • Descaling of the heating elements and boiler
  • Measurement of wash and rinse temperatures
  • Adjustment of the dosing pumps and hose replacement if needed
  • Check of pumps, gaskets and electrical connections

Frequently asked questions

Why is my commercial dishwasher not cleaning properly?

Common causes are blocked wash arms and nozzles, dirty tank water, a low wash temperature and insufficient detergent dosing. First clean the filters and arms, refill the tank with fresh water and check the detergent container. If the problem continues, the temperatures, heating elements and dosing pump need to be measured.

Can I use household detergent in a commercial dishwasher?

No. Household detergents foam; the foam reduces pump efficiency, spoils the wash and can cause overflowing. Use detergent and rinse aid made for commercial machines and suitable for automatic dosing.

What temperature should the wash and rinse water be?

It varies by machine; in commercial dishwashers the wash water is usually around 55–65 °C and the final rinse water around 80–85 °C. The values in your machine’s manual are what count. If the rinse temperature is low, dishes are neither hygienic nor do they dry quickly.
